It is the largest museum complex in Tuscany, as well as an impressive Renaissance palace. It is located in the Oltrarno area of the city, which means "on the other side" of the Arno River.
The palace was built by a wealthy banker from the city, Luca Pitti, a rival of the Medici family.
In 1550, it was purchased with the dowry of Eleonora di Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de' Medici. Her desire was to enhance the city's most important garden, Boboli, which today is one of the most beautiful monumental gardens in Italy.
With the extinction of the Medici family, the palace became the residence of two other dynasties: the House of Habsburg-Lorraine (successors of the Medici from 1737) and the House of Savoy, who resided there as the royal family of Italy from 1865, when Florence became the capital of Italy.Today, it houses five museums, including the splendid palace gallery, known as the Palatine Gallery, which boasts about 500 works selected from the masterpieces of the main Medici collections.
It is an extraordinary collection, containing the world's largest concentration of works by Raphael, as well as paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Caravaggio, and Rubens.
